History of The Bower

After much research and consultation with tourism operators and associations, the vision for “The Bower at Broulee” began in 1992. Sue and Mark Berry purchased 40 hectares of virgin bushland 1km from Broulee Beach, strategically positioned between the major markets of Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne on the Sydney Melbourne coastal route. This has proved to be an ideal position for an upmarket self-contained accommodation facility for couples, which is unique in the region.

The objective was to provide a unique, luxurious space surrounded by natural bush land, flooded with natural light in complete privacy. The aim is to allow couples to relax, recharge and reconnect – not only with nature, but with each other.

Why the Bower is unique

Other differentiators of The Bower, especially when enjoyed taken in combination are:

  • ‘Exclusive’ access to the adjacent Illawong Nature Reserve walk.
  • Absolute privacy of the bush setting, yet only 1km from some of the best surf on the South Coast at Broulee.
  • Close proximity to the Mogo Zoo, including its new Australiana exhibit. If you are planning a trip to the Zoo, please remember to let us know and we can sell discounted admission tickets from The Bower reception office.
  • Availability of a range of internationally ready soft adventure experiences from sea kayaking, mountain bike riding, horse riding, birding and rambling to sky-diving.
  • Availability of full complement of Day Spa and pampering services, on-site, if required.
  • Easy day trip access to Montague Island, Narooma, Tilba, Gulaga, Mumbulla Falls, Pigeon House Mountain and Pebbly Beach etc.
  • Easy creek walks through forested reserve to North Broulee Beach and Candlagan Creek.

The bird life and other wildlife constantly amaze and engage our guests combined with the absolute privacy and seclusion that we offer. This is summed up by the typical guest comment “Can’t see [or hear] any of our [human] neighbours !”

Another unique feature is the adjacent Illawong Nature Reserve which is only accessible to guests of The Bower and is a very popular attraction due to its ecological value as habitat for native waterfowl, a pair of resident sea eagles, its geological history, aboriginal heritage in addition to many examples of bush tucker sources.

The Candlagan walk at The Bower provides easy access to the Broulee beach and Broulee Island via the tree covered public reserve on the banks of Candlagan Creek
